South Oakleigh is a residential suburb located about 15 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s central business district. Its local government area is the City of Monash. South Oakleigh is essentially a residential suburb settled by immigrants during the mid-twentieth century and continues to grow as a multicultural area.
South Oakleigh is serviced by Huntingdale, Oakleigh and Clayton railway stations. Train and bus public transport offers easy access to all areas of Melbourne. With only a 40-minute train ride into the city, South Oakleigh is the perfect middle-ground between Melbourne’s central business district and suburbs.
Traveling between South Oakleigh and the neighbouring eastern and western suburbs is now easy thanks to the extension of South Road, which links western suburbs (such as Bentleigh, Moorabbin, and Brighton) with the suburbs to the east of South Oakleigh (such as Clayton, Mulgrave and Springvale).
South Oakleigh College is also a short 15-minute drive from Brighton beach and Sandringham beach.
Natural local features include parks and reserves, wetlands and golf courses, with South Oakleigh located in South-eastern Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt, surrounded by three noted private golf clubs: Metropolitan, Huntingdale and Commonwealth.
After the completion of the South Road extension, Mavis Hutter Reserve was created and contains outdoor gym facilities, a playground, and a granitic sand track which creates a circuit in the park. Other parks in South Oakleigh are Dales and Talbot Parks, Davies Reserve, Bald Hill Reserve and Warrawee Park, all close to South Oakleigh College.
The Olympic Ice Skating Centre is located across the road from South Oakleigh College and other sporting facilities nearby include – GESAC, Oakleigh Sport and Recreation Centre, Oakleigh Indoor Sports Centre and the College itself is used by many sporting clubs offering basketball, netball, soccer and cricket on the weekends and after school.
The Oakleigh shopping precinct, located 2 kilometres from the College is home to more than 280 retailers and service providers. The lively outdoor shopping strip and Oakleigh Central shopping centre comprise a host of food and dining outlets, fashion and beauty stores, giftware and homeware outlets, professional services, and more.
South Oakleigh College is also 3 kilometres away from Clayton Shopping Plaza (7 minute drive, 10-minute bus ride).
The shops in Oakleigh and Clayton give easy access to specialty groceries from around the world, which is convenient for celebrating cultural traditions.
Chadstone Shopping Centre, known as ‘the fashion capital’ comprises 500 stores, including the state-of-the-art HOYTS Cinema Complex. Chadstone is 5 kilometres and a 15-minute bus ride away from the College.
Westfield Southland, a retail complex with approximately 400 retailers, is located in the suburb of Cheltenham; which is 8 kilometres from the College and easy to reach by bus.
Monash University is 6 kilometres to the northeast of the College, easily accessible via public transport services. Other tertiary institutions are located not too far from the South Oakleigh area, including Melbourne University, Deakin University and Holmesglen Institute of TAFE, which are accessible via public transport Victoria.
